How to Keep Your Dog's Coat Healthy Between Grooming Visits

Your groomer only sees your dog every few weeks. Learn the at-home brushing, bathing, and diet tips that keep your dog's coat in top shape year-round.

How to Keep Your Dog's Coat Healthy Between Grooming Visits

Your groomer can only do so much

We love seeing our regular clients, but here's a truth most groomers won't tell you straight: what you do at home between appointments matters more than the grooming appointment itself. A dog that gets brushed regularly at home is a dream on the grooming table—no painful dematting, no surprise shave-downs, and a much faster, less stressful appointment. A dog that hasn't been touched in 8 weeks? That's a totally different story. We're not here to guilt-trip anyone, but we do want to give you the real tools to keep your dog's coat in great shape between visits.

Brush the right way, not just the top layer

The number one mistake we see? Surface brushing. Owners run a brush over the top of the coat and think they're good. But mats form underneath, close to the skin, where the brush never reaches. The fix is line brushing: part the coat in sections and brush from the skin outward. Use a slicker brush for the body and a metal comb to check your work—if the comb slides through easily, you're golden. If it catches, there's a tangle hiding in there. This technique takes an extra 5 minutes but saves you from expensive dematting fees and keeps your dog way more comfortable.

Target the trouble spots first

Every dog has spots that mat faster than others. Behind the ears. Under the armpits. Around the collar. The back of the thighs. Between the toes. These areas get friction and moisture, which is a recipe for tangles. When you're short on time, skip the easy parts and go straight for these trouble spots. Even a 5-minute session focused on just these areas every other day will prevent 90% of the matting problems we see. Pro tip: take the collar off at home. We can't tell you how many mats we've seen caused by collars rubbing against fur 24/7.

Bathing at home: do it right or don't do it

We get asked all the time—"can I bathe my dog at home between grooming appointments?" Absolutely, but there are a few rules. First, always brush before the bath, never after. Water tightens existing tangles into concrete-hard mats. Second, use a real dog shampoo—human shampoo has the wrong pH and will dry out your dog's skin. Third, dry thoroughly. In San Diego's climate, most people let their dog air dry, which is fine for short coats. But if your dog has a medium or long coat, a quick blow-dry (on a cool setting) prevents that damp, musty smell and stops moisture from getting trapped against the skin.

Diet shows up in the coat

This one surprises a lot of owners, but your dog's coat is basically a report card for their nutrition. Dull, dry, flaky coat? It might not be a grooming problem—it might be a food problem. Look for dog foods with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids (fish oil is great), and make sure protein is the first ingredient. We've seen dogs completely transform their coat quality within a month of switching to a better food. Some of our clients also add a fish oil supplement, and the difference is honestly shocking. A healthy coat from the inside out is easier to groom, sheds less, and looks better between appointments.

Know when to call your groomer between appointments

Sometimes stuff happens between grooming visits that needs professional attention. Skunk encounters, foxtails stuck in the coat, a sudden hot spot, or a mat that's too tight to brush out safely at home—don't try to DIY these. A quick maintenance visit is always cheaper and less stressful than waiting until your next full appointment and discovering a bigger problem. We offer bath-only and brush-out services for exactly these situations. It's not a failure to come in early—it's smart pet ownership. Your dog's comfort always comes first.
